The Last Knight
Bella gerant alii, tu felix Austria nube – ‘Let others wage war: thou, happy Austria, marry’.
The Dawn of the Renaissance
This game is about the clashes of kings and queens, princes and princesses, on battlefields and in royal courts, during the growing pains of the Renaissance. It is set in the period of 1475-1510, an era where the medieval world still had some sway in Europe but new tools like banking, gunpowder and humanistic statecraft were beginning to displace it.
The middle ages were characterised by constant warfare, with kings standing at the head of their armies. In the Renaissance, leaders would instead take to the stage in the war of ideas. During the 35 years the game spans, you will likely need both to succeed.
The Game
Players set the grand strategy for their faction over five-year game turns. Your decisions will shape your faction and influence Europe as a whole. Factions can cooperate on common projects to direct the development of their region, or compete with each other for power and influence. Half of each turn is spent managing your
corner of Europe and the other half in wider diplomacy where you will confer with your allies, treat with your enemies or extort, threaten and start wars.
What will I be doing?
The game has simple board game mechanics for managing your domains and forces, but much of your time will be spent on diplomacy and role-playing. Orders are resolved
on a closed map; news of actions taken further afield may take some time to reach you. Players will issue orders that further their own lands, bloodlines and allies. They will also be invested in making their part of Europe a centre of culture and prosperity. Players can also issue orders to rally armies to march on their enemies, send nefarious agents to conduct sabotage or even assassinations.
Roles
There is plenty of oomph in the cast list of larger than life characters all across Europe from the Habsburgs, the Medici, the Tudors, the Ottomans, Popes of various
denominations, a growing number of elector princes from the Holy Roman Empire as well as many others. The four play areas are geographical areas, the four corners
of Europe, which the factions call home. Each play area starts with its own ongoing events in which the ideas of the Renaissance will present challenges and opportunities.
